If you’re after a hearty bowl of bolognese or a piece of Nonna’s homemade tiramisu – then this is not the place for you.

ACME Sydney offers a completely new take on Italian. Mitch Orr, the “M” in ACME hailing from Sepia, Duke Bistro, Buzo and 121 BC even jokes that ACME is “#notanitalianrestaurant – we like to think of ourselves more like Chinatown than an Italian resto”.

Playing on the element of surpise, ACME’s dishes offer a mash-up of Italian and Asian flavours, which may look a little strange in written form, but translates into a delicious reality. I was pleasantly surprised by the macaroni with pig’s head and egg yolk and the intensely flavoured linguini with black garlic and burnt chili. The dishes are intriguingly layered and somehow seem to….work.

But it’s the interior design elements by Luchetto Krelle that get this writer going – patina walls, delicate ceramic candleholders and denim-washed napkins ”“ all this with the restaurant’s unconventional take on Italian cuisine served with a killer hip-hop soundtrack make ACME a very welcome addition to Sydney’s dining scene.
