Restaurant Find: Little Catch Shanghai
Visiting Shanghai’s fresh aquatic markets can be an exotic experience that ”“ for some ”“ is best left for a guided tour. However, that’s not what two Singaporean sisters from a three-generation family seafood supply business had in mind when they founded Little Catch. Opened in January, the minimal but polished space brings a modern twist on the local fishmonger to Shanghai’s laid-back French Concession.
Jiayi and Wenyi Huang teamed up with Linehouse design studio to transform a Chinese takeaway into a shop that looks like it was caught in a fishing net. Inside, packed in stainless steel trays of ice are high quality, sustainably harvested Icelandic cod, Norwegian salmon and more, while the shelves are lined with delightfully packaged offerings of imported sea salt and sardines. The produce is mainly of the prepare-at-home variety, but their wine selection is tempting enough to keep you there on a breezy summer day. Take advantage of the eight-seater patio, the oyster special, and a changing menu of cold side dishes like the poke bowl, a traditional Hawaiian raw fish salad that Jiayi calls “deconstructed sushi.”
