It wouldn’t be such a stretch to say that Marfa boasts more art galleries per capita than any other town in Texas (or the country for that matter). Pair that with a slew of restaurants that rival the quality of big city standards and pre-2016, you’d be forgiven as a visitor of you were caught scratching your head wondering where all the higher end, art-and-design-led hotels were hiding. Enter Hotel Saint George, the latest gap-filling addition to Marfa’s hotel scene. This new addition to Marfa is a minimalist marvel that has been thoughtfully designed by Houston-based architecture firm Carlos Jimenez Studio taking it from the original namesake hotel (that welcomed cowboys and railroad travelers until 1929) to today’s Judd-worthy contemporary art and design hotel hotspot.

The hotel itself (naturally, being in Marfa) houses an impressive 300 original, curated works from artists like Mark Flood, Christopher Wool, Jeremy Deprez to Jeff Elrod that are displayed all over the public hotel spaces but also throughout the 55 rooms, allowing guests of the hotel a more intimate experience with each piece.

And for locals or visitors not spending the night, Hotel Saint George has quickly become the town meeting spot with its buzzing lobby bar/café, the carefully curated Marfa Book Co. collection which takes residence on the ground floor and LaVenture, a restaurant helmed by executive chef Allison Jenkins (previously of laV Restaurant & Wine Bar in Austin and nominated for 2015 Food & Wine Magazine’s “People’s Best New Chef). Jenkins turns out a menu of French-influenced, American fare heavily centered on locally sourced ingredients. Dinner at LaVenture shouldn’t go without the mouthwatering Black Angus Ribeye and the ever-satisfying Hand Rolled Whole Wheat Garganelli Pasta.

With a soon to open Mexican restaurant, which will serve as the town’s gap filler for top quality Mexican cuisine and a new pool and bar opening across the street this Spring, Hotel Saint George is certainly not your average small town Texan hotel.
