Art Hotspot: Judd Foundation NYC, 101 Spring Street
For the minimalist art and design enthusiast Donald Judd’s former home and studio is the ultimate art experience in NYC’s Soho. Judd meticulously converted the historical industrial building into a live/work space, now considered to be the birthplace of “permanent installation”.
On the guided tour visitors can experience the space with Judd’s permanently installed pieces as the artist originally intended, exploring the five floors which also include modern masterpieces by Dan Flavin, Ad Reinhardt, Claes Oldenburg, John Chamberlain, and Frank Stella.
Visitors also get an intimate look into Judd’s life through the ephemera of his curated living spaces such as his spectacular collection of antique glassware and reference books. But the real pleasure is in exploring the space itself, as Judd’s considerations of the architecture, the industrial history of the building, as well as the changing light conditions set off by the floor to ceiling windows, all work to inform his installations in situ, making each individual experience unique.
Guided Visits to 101 Spring Street are offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, and on Saturdays at 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 4pm. Bookings are essential.
