Bar Find: Bar Goto NYC
At Bar Goto on the Lower East Side, you can trust that you’re in good hands. It’s owned by Kenta Goto who moved to Manhattan from Tokyo 15 years ago; mastered mixology during a 7-year stint at The Pegu Club; and has now combined Japanese sensibilities and his cocktail expertise to open a modern and upscale izakaya just below Houston Street.
Bar Goto unites everything there is to love about Japanese aesthetics, quality, and attention to detail, while staying firmly rooted in the Lower East Side. The drinks are remarkable (not surprisingly: Gota earned the Spirited Award for American Bartender in 2011), each complex yet presented with shocking simplicity, and the food pairs perfectly.
The space is clean, minimal, and decorated with a 100-year-old kimono, inviting and cozy enough for any winter night. The presence of sake, sashimi, and okonomiyaki (along with the precision of each drink and the careful service) will have you longing for Japan, while a drink named “the far east side” will instantly remind you of the neighborhood outside.

Dana is originally from Washington, DC, is now based in NYC, but is most excited when she’s traveling. She’s a street-food obsessed food and travel writer who spends her free time watching Anthony Bourdain reruns and exploring the nooks and crannies of her NYC neighborhood, Chinatown. Her heart is torn between Paris, the Greek Islands, Japan, and Penang, so her dream last supper would look something like a four course meal of sashimi, laksa, fresh grilled octopus, and a heaping plate of gooey French cheese. |
