Café & Concept Store Find: Saturdays Surf Tokyo
With its fashion-forward tilt and high energy pace, it’s easy to forget that Tokyo is a big city island where waves at Chiba and Kamakura are just a short train ride away. Enter Saturdays Surf. Located on the main drag of trendy Daikanyama, Saturdays Surf Tokyo is a bright open reminder that the surf lifestyle is alive and well in Japan.
Inspired by the surf shops of the 50’s and 60’s, the vibe here is decidedly laid-back and Californian, with bleached wood floors and an open concept retail experience. The space is airy and clean – a stark contrast to the hubbub and chaos of city life just outside the front door. Shoppers can browse rows of striped board shorts and brightly colored tees bearing the brand’s signature logo, but the real draw is the collection of hand-shaped surfboards. From long to short, the employees here (all surfers) are happy to help find the right board for you.
If you’re more turf than surf, pop in for a caffeine fix. The cheery baristas serve up a mean cappuccino. Enjoy it at the sleek, white coffee bar or outside on the inviting wooden deck. It’s the quickest way to get to Malibu from Tokyo.

Dulci is an art director and recent West Coast transplant after 11 years in New York City. She’s equally happy fly-fishing in the pampas of Patagonia or eating pan tomate around midnight in Madrid. She documents it all on Instagram and her travel site. Her dream is to live in Tokyo. |
