Café Find: Café Henrie NYC
(Cafe Henrie NYC has been reported closed)
Cafe Henrie is, among other things, a cafe on the Lower East Side. You’ll find coffee, tea, and food that puts a spin on the usual cafe fare (think “avo hash” – whipped avocado, poached egg, and tomato confit on a potato hash waffle – as opposed to the standard avo toast), but to think of it merely as a place for your morning caffeine fix would be doing it a great disservice.
First off, Cafe Henrie is the sort of cafe where you can sit all day – with a book, laptop, or friends – only order one, $3 coffee, and never worry about overstaying your welcome. You should order more because the food is delicious, but it’s a place that’s meant for lingering.
Along with lingering, it’s meant to be a space for gatherings, for art exhibitions, and for feeling creatively inspired overall. It’s owned by graffiti artist André Saraiva, the mug you’ll drink from was made by Nashville artist Peter Shire, the bench you might sit on was made by artist Tom Sachs, and the neon sign out front was made by artist Petra Collins. Saravia designed it to feel both like an extension of his Forsyth St. home and “as a blank canvas where [his] friends can project their dreams,” so don’t be surprised if it looks different each time you visit.

Dana is originally from Washington, DC, is now based in NYC, but is most excited when she’s traveling. She’s a street-food obsessed food and travel writer who spends her free time watching Anthony Bourdain reruns and exploring the nooks and crannies of her NYC neighborhood, Chinatown. Her heart is torn between Paris, the Greek Islands, Japan, and Penang, so her dream last supper would look something like a four course meal of sashimi, laksa, fresh grilled octopus, and a heaping plate of gooey French cheese. |
