Boutique Patisserie Find: Petal Met Sugar Sydney
There’s a certain eloquence to the creativity-meets-craftsmanship combination of best-friend-duo Angela Wong and Elsa Li’s Petal Met Sugar. From their modest Woolloomooloo shopfront, the pair ”“ one a self-trained florist and the other a French-trained pâtissière with experience alongside Adriano Zumbo ”“ bring effortlessly artistic and highly Instagrammable desserts to Sydney.
Just beyond Hyde Park and behind the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Petal Met Sugar’s inviting all-glass frontage showcases the kitchen (where Li works her magic), a coffee counter with a pastry box and Wong’s blooming flower shop. The interior design stemmed from Japanese retail spaces, but a scandi-cool vibe is strong in the clean lines, hexagonal tiles and multiple shades of white, with neon signage popping bright alongside orchids and roses.
Attention to detail is as strong in the design of the café-cum-patisserie as it is in the dishes. An array of pastries (including croissants with ham and gruyere, or house-made vanilla bean butter), tarts and gateaux are daily favourites. From the salted caramel tart, complete with gold sea salt; the signature Terrarium ”“ an element-rich, layered delight of jasmine or passion fruit panna cotta with chocolate soil, edible flowers and yuzu gel inside a circular white chocolate shell; to the soft, clean peach oolong gateaux, every plate is a unique masterpiece. Sweetness is restrained, and minimalism is key. Petal Met Sugar is quietly confident, entirely decadent and executed to a tee.
