Contemporary Art Find: Chateau la Coste Provence
Situated just 20 minutes drive from Aix en Provence, amongst the sunny Provençal countryside is Chateau la Coste, a place where wine, modern art and architecture intermingle in the way unlikely best friends would. Sure, it’s not the first time wine has been paired with art but there really is something about the way Chateau la Coste has created a visual juxtaposition between winemaking and modern art within the surrounds of rural Provence ”“ like putting a space-age Frank Gehry structure smack bang in the middle of Cézanne country.
The Chateau’s ever-evolving grounds are open year round for visitors to enjoy lunch at the café, wine tastings, and art-walks where they can tour the incredible buildings and art installations that have been commissioned from what reads like a roll call of the most influential artists and architects in the world.
Artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Richard Serra, Liam Gillick and Andy Goldsworthy have artworks on display. The structures found dotted around the breathtaking grounds have been designed by the likes of Tadao Ando and Frank Gehry. There’s even an installation planned from the controversial artist Ai Wei Wei.
