Design Hotel Find: The Hoxton Amsterdam
Like most people besotted with this charming city, one of my favourite features of Amsterdam is it’s crooked canal houses. Their mis-matched frames, those unnervingly narrow doorways, and the way they lean over, almost as if to peer down and say ”˜hello’, as you cycle by. So, when an animated buzz outside the archetypal canal houses of the Herengracht caught my eye, I was naturally drawn to investigate. What did I find? The Hoxton Amsterdam – the third location to sprout from the Hoxton name, which has come to be associated with achingly dapper hotels, and is the newest hotspot for the cool kids of Amsterdam.
A first look inside the Amsterdam Hoxton reveals an eclectic mismatch of painfully trendy vintage and industrial vibes. The lounge area, which quickly fills with Amsterdam yuppies post-5pm, offers an inviting selection of leather sofas and quirky armchairs, each scattered with an assortment of contrasting cushions. A perfect compliment to the clean, white tiles – which feels like a nod to the classic London tube station – that make up the sleek bar area.
It’s hard to talk about a hotel without mentioning the bedrooms, although the Hoxton oozes so much character it’s easy to forget that’s it’s intent. The rooms are simple yet stylish with the perfect injection of personality – including a drawer labelled ”˜crap’ and a ”˜breakfast bag’ which is left outside the door to await the ”˜breakfast fairies’. Most rooms offer that classic Amsterdam canal view plus it’s idyllic central location is perfect for all the touristy go-tos.
Whether you’re making a weekend of it, debriefing with your girl gang over Sunday brunch, or simply in the mood for a cocktail; head to the Hoxton to brush shoulders with Amsterdam’s cool kids.
And good luck deciding which delightful detail to Instagram first.

British expat who relocated to Amsterdam almost 4 years ago to study; the plan was to stick around for a year but I accidentally fell head over heels for this charming city and his irresistible charm. Peanut butter and IPAs make my world go round, my favourite Dutch word is handschoenen (gloves) ”“ literally, hand shoes, and one time I auditioned to play a zombie extra in the movie, World War Z.
