What does it mean to be British? A good question to mull over while browsing the delightful wares at The New Craftsmen London, where ”˜British-ness’ isn’t about politics or nationalism, but a connection to a culture and sense of place evoked by traditional crafts and materials from all corners of the British Isles.
With a network of 75 makers in Britain, designers work collaboratively to bring a contemporary take on traditional crafts and materials, ranging from glassware to furniture. This presents a challenge, as many of these traditions and skills are slowly disappearing, which sometimes calls for special measures ”“ a team of craftsmen were brought out of retirement to create the line ”˜Baskets of the British Isles’, preserving this knowledge for the generation to come. Of course, heritage evolves with time, and today’s young and bright British artisans are breathing new life and fresh ideas into these storied traditions.
Visit the New Craftsmen’s Mayfair space for an overview of the state of British craft, and browse their stock of limited editions and exclusive collaborations. The recently refurbished studio is also open for designers and architects to draw inspiration from their material library and commission bespoke pieces.
