In Amsterdam, the former headquarters of De Volkskrant newspaper has been given an imaginative and fashionable new life as an affordable design hotel. Situated merely minutes (by bike) away from the city’s picturesque canals, Volkshotel Amsterdam (and its rooftop club, Canvas) is where the local and visiting creative crowd prefers to let their hair down.

Starting from around 70 EUR a night, design-minded guests are getting value for money especially when it comes to aesthetics. Clever visual references to the building’s newsy history are dotted throughout the hotel, which can be best described as quirky, conceptual Dutch design with an industrial vibe.

Paying a little more can get you into one of the 9 special rooms that have been designed individually by a different local artist or design team. That said, the standard rooms are certainly not lacking when it comes to design seriousness.
