In 2005 a firehouse in Marylebone, dating from 1889 was decommissioned. In 2011 it was bought by André Balazs (Chateau Marmont, The Mercer) and since opening in 2014, became the most talked about destination in London.

Countless reviews have celebrated the level of attention paid, with the help of Paris-based Studio KO, to its creation. Imagine 70’s Hollywood meets French chateau in an affluent London neighbourhood and you’re off to a good start. Entry is marked not by signage but instead by an intoxicating scent created by perfumer Azzi Glasser, distinctly noticeable as you walk through the black gate into a garden courtyard housing the first of many fireplaces, cosy outdoor seating and an oyster cart.

The engine house is now the restaurant headed by Chef Nuno Mendes and complete with a rustic open kitchen and a private ”˜love snug’ perfect for two. The Laddershed is an invitation-only bar reserved for hotel guests, friends of the Firehouse and private events, accessible behind the sommelier’s passage. There are 26 bedrooms, most featuring gas log fires and minibars that can be more accurately described as walk-in cupboards. Room keys come with tassels and guests are invited to ”˜Dial 0 for anything.’

Whilst it remains a haven for celebrities and media types, the Firehouse is, well, quite magical all on its own. The front of house team shares a rare charm; they are personable, swift and ensure you feel like a member of an extended firehouse family. Hostesses wear outfits designed by Emilia Wickstead and Director of Food and Beverage, Guillaume Glipa can often be found mingling with guests and leading by example.

Since inception no detail has been left unchecked and stories of meticulousness are not exaggerated; Balazs gathered the best talent to deliver a peach-lit dream destination. Chiltern Firehouse has more in store, with a pub, bakery and even more rooms yet to open.
