Boutique Hotel Find: Hotel Tugu Bali
Indonesia’s rich culture penetrates every corner of Hotel Tugu Bali. The growing number of buzzy Canggu surf hangouts hasn’t seemed to disturb the romantic oasis that lies within – and thank goodness for that.
Owned by an Indonesian antique collector, Hotel Tugu is filled with artifacts from Java and Bali. The bold, passionate Puri Mayeur villa is furnished with pieces by Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès, who moved to the island in 1932 and later married his muse, Ni Polok, a Legong dancer; and The Walter Spies Pavilion is dedicated to the artist whose letters, paintings and memorabilia celebrate the art deco era.
There are six secluded spa sanctuaries to choose from, each offering traditional health treatments. The alfresco treatment hut is aptly named ”˜Nglamun Leha-leha’, a Javanese expression for daydreaming and lazing, but perhaps the most unique is Kamar Solek, a make-up hut perched above the wild Lotus ponds. The Javanese have long since incorporated flowers and incense to stimulate the spirit, creating a relaxed state of mind before any physical treatment commences. The scent of frangipani, tropical magnolia, rose, jasmine, and ylang ylang – believed to be the flowers of the supreme deities – fill the air.
Hotel Tugu is steeped in romance, with sunken outdoor baths and petal-covered beds balanced by bookshelves and a deep knowledge of Indonesian rituals. Here, you are free to fall in love with it all.
