Design Hotel Find: Rae’s Byron Bay
Blessed by Buddhist Monks and Aboriginal Elders, Rae’s on Watego’s Byron Bay is a seven-suite whitewashed boutique hotel set on one of the world’s prettiest beaches in Australia.
With only three owners since the 1960’s, the boutique hotel has long appealed to free-spirited bohemian types seeking down-to-earth luxury with soul. Interiors are eclectic and consist of Moroccan tiles, carved Balinese doors and artwork by David Bromley throughout.
Each suite is fitted out with a four-poster timber canopy bed, rattan chairs and shuttered windows, some with azure-tinted water views. There’s a gorgeous boutique spa plus Rae’s Restaurant that was a destination restaurant years before the concept became fashionable.
With a rock-star clientele including Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz and Kate Hudson and film director Baz Luhrmann who wrote most of his feature ”˜Australia’ in the Mirabella Penthouse Suite, it’s little wonder the laid-back yet exclusive hideaway is often regarded as Australia’s own Chateau Marmont.
