Design Hotel Find: Hotel The Exchange Amsterdam
This article by Jenny Nguyen first appeared in ForbesLife
Hotel The Exchange Amsterdam is an eccentric hotel concept that brings sartorial style to the hotel business in a way that only the idiosyncratic Dutch can do ”“ rather unexpectedly and with a good dose of irony.
Each of the 61 rooms at Hotel The Exchange have been designed by the brightest young minds at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute with the guidance of Dutch design studio Ina Matt. As part of the process, the students have taken specifically developed fabrics from the Dutch Textile Museum to dress the rooms like they would their own catwalk models. And in doing so, they’ve managed to blur the line between fashion and interior architecture.
Judging by the visual diversity between the rooms, students have obviously been given an “almost anything goes” creative mandate. This has resulted in wildly conceptual designs that range from a cluster of eyes plastered on the wall to what looks like the set of the Marie Antoinette film. It is definitely worth mentioning that whichever room you choose, remember that this is not a hotel for the visually fainthearted ”“ guests should be prepared for an avant-garde experience because none of the rooms could possibly fall under the vanilla category.
The rooms are rated “1-star” to “5-star”, depending on comfort, size and location (rather than design style) and the hotel comes complete with its own all-day restaurant called “STOCK” as well as “OPTIONS!” its design centric department store, which reminds us of a well-curated museum gift shop.
Perhaps by now you’ve noticed a naming theme? We think Hotel The Exchange is definitely giving a nod to its view of the iconic Beurs van Berlage building, which is Amsterdam’s early 20th century stock exchange.
