NYC Restaurant Find: Charlie Bird
CHARLIE BIRD, SOHO
Lingering lunches at Charlie Bird are my new favourite weekend pursuit. Modern Italian food isn’t always done with as much flair in this town, there’s always that fine line that’s crossed where the food is more American-Italian than it is Italian-Italian, but Charlie Bird gets it right. I’m even poised to say it’s done as well as my other modern Italian/European favorites, Roman’s or Estela.
The crowd at Charlie Bird is definitely a moneyed West Village stereotype ”“ you will see a lot of “it” bags resting on chairs ”“ if that’s not your kinda crowd you can rest assured the vibe is still laidback probably due to the restaurant’s good hip-hop soundtrack. By good I mean more Chet Faker than Kanye West.
There’s a lot more to love about Charlie Bird but their brilliant idea of serving any wine on the list as a half carafe for half the bottle price is definitely worth of a mention. So is the Fig Foccacia, which is sinfully delicious.
Best Bit: Sipping one of their superb wines (expertly curated at different price ranges) from Zalto glassware is more pleasurable than you could ever imagine. Riedel eat your heart out!
