NYC Restaurant Find: Sakagura
Sakagura is not the kind of restaurant you just happen upon ”“ it’s one that you need to spend time seeking out. Enter through the lobby of a stark Midtown office building and make your way into the basement. You’ll open the door to the restaurant’s expansive underground space and think to yourself, “How is it that the Japanese always do underground dining so well?”
Inside, the high ceilinged, industrial interiors that are highlighted with blond wood accents and cherry blossom branches give you the feeling that you’ve stepped right into one of Tokyo’s underground secret gardens.
Food is expertly prepared, as you would expect from a high-end establishment like this one. But the real draw card is the imposing selection of more than 200 sakes making Sakagura the best sake source in the city. Thumbing through the menu will make you realize how little you know about sake and then it will probably inspire you to learn more, which is probably a good idea before you go for the higher-end bottles.
