SPA CASTLE, COLLEGE POINT – QUEENS

There is such a thing as a relaxing adventure at Spa Castle, a Korean day spa concept in College Point, Queens. The words relaxing and adventure probably aren’t used together so often but you’ll know what I mean when you set foot in this 60,000-square-foot multiplex of pools, saunas, Jacuzzis, massage rooms and restaurants.

So here’s the deal and how to navigate the spa. Pay $45 for your weekend admission fee, split up from the other sexes in your group and make your way to the change rooms. Do as you’re told and take your shoes off then store them in the purpose built shoe cupboard that you can lock with the uniquely identifying electronic wristband given to you when you arrived (remember that this band is the currency you need to pay for any services, food or drink while you’re in the complex).

Now you’re in. I won’t bore you with a detailed account of everything you can do at Spa Castle (yes, there’s that much) so I’ll just list out the highlights and things that were impressively relaxing or adventurous:

• A traditional Asian and Northern European naked bathing room, dip into the pools from low to high temperature then reinvigorate in the ice water bath (men and women are separate of course!)
• You’re provided with a pretty functional and almost purposefully unsexy tee shirt/shorts ensemble that must be worn in the unisex areas. Obviously Spa Castle is not the kind of place where you’re going to pull dates and that kinda takes the edge off if you ask me!
• A whole floor of themed saunas. Who even knew you could get differently themed saunas? Choose from colour therapy, Himalayan salt, jade and many others
• A sleeping area. It may seem weird to sleep next to a bunch of strangers but with all the hot and cold therapy, sometimes you just need a nap.
• An enormous hot spa area on the rooftop that’s open year round even when it snows!
• Believe it or not they have Starbucks in there
• A full bar and a Korean restaurant serving authentic Korean food
• A huge list of spa and beauty treatments available ”“ the cheapest coming in at $50 is the traditional Korean body scrub where a Korean woman will proceed to hand scrub every inch of dead skin off your body leaving it shiny and buffed.

Best Bit: A relaxing “daycation” with friends at what feels like an adult waterpark where you leave feeling detoxified, fresh, buffed and well fed.
