Restaurant Find: Almanak Copenhagen
Claus Meyer, the founding father of New Nordic cuisine (not to mention the co-founder of Noma) has joined forces with Danish jazz music legend Niels Lan Doky to convert a 1937 Art Deco customs house into The Standard, now a stylish dining and jazz music destination.
With only one eve left in Copenhagen, regrettably, we were only able to experience one of the 3 restaurants at The Standard ”“ The choice was Almanak, and looking back, what a good choice it was indeed.
The restaurant, serving lunch and dinner offers vibrantly hued smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) at lunch and traditional Danish food with a modern interpretation at dinner. According to the restaurant, the menu is cooked like ”food that our grandmother would have made if she had known what we know today”. Our response to this is that the Almanak chefs must have some seriously talented chefs for grandmothers.
Inside the mint colored harbor side building it’s hard not to be taken aback by the strikingly beautiful interiors. Everything you’d expect from a stylish Danish restaurant ”“ starting with classically Danish clean lines, unobstructed natural light, muted tones of white and grey and a mesmerizing view out to the harbor’s sparkling clean waters.
Dinner at The Standard’s Almanak followed by drinks and jazz at the upstairs “Jazzklub” brings a new, very chic meaning to dinner and jazz.
