Restaurant Find: The Good Egg London
Picture the scene; it’s a Saturday night. It’s pouring with rain as our Uber spits us onto Church Street in Stoke Newington. My very hungry, very health conscious friend looks at me expectantly as I glance at the eateries in the closest proximity. Like a trendy beacon, The Good Egg shines.
Though we haven’t booked, by some miracle, we are seated immediately at a cosy corner booth and to our delight it’s all candles and intimate murmur. A quick scan of the menu and we know we’re in for a treat.
Though The Good Egg has been open for less than 6 months, its reputation for delicious NYC brunchalicious-cum-Middle Eastern fare already proceeds it. Formerly a pop-up presence at food markets, the restaurant itself was a crowd-fund project – and boy, should those crowd funders be championed.
The menu is updated daily, with a reassuring focus on seasonal produce. Expect a smorgasbord of small but beautifully formed plates that are healthy and decadent all at once, from the juicy dak dak salad – this particular version in early spring features pine nuts, pomegranate seeds and kohlrabi, a crisp bulbous cabbage – to the burnt aubergine zhoung served with soft warm pittas and smoky aubergine purée. We should also talk about the meat; we opted for the za’tar fried chicken, encased in a crispy, herb-enthused buttermilk coating and served with chilli honey. Carnivores rejoice.
The wine list is reassuringly compact, as is the cocktail line-up and there are a handful of genuinely good craft beers on offer.
The interior ticks all the trendy, independently-run boxes too. It’s sober but warm, with dark walnut floorboards and shelves bulging with produce which patrons are encouraged to purchase. Honestly, after tasting the food, I can imagine many do, in an attempt to take a slice of the sweet sweet action home.
