Restaurant Find: Graanmarkt 13 Restaurant Antwerp
In the basement of Antwerp’s chicest concept store, Graanmarkt 13 (a boutique, gallery space and small design hotel) is one of the city’s most lauded restaurants. As with Graanmarkt 13’s other ventures it goes without saying that the restaurant’s interior design and ambience has been undertaken with staunch consideration and detail. However, this in no way overshadows the delectable seasonal dishes on offer.
Chef Seppe Nobels (once voted best young chef in Belgium) has designed a menu that utilizes Graanmarkt 13’s lush rooftop and courtyard for urban vegetable farming. The wining results are unmistakable as soon as one tastes the beautiful vegetable and seafood centric dishes that Nobels and his team have cooked with a lightness of touch, pleasing the senses of Antwerp’s fussiest taste buds and eyes.
Chef Nobels has a clear commitment to mindful, seasonal eating in his ever-changing menu, which focuses on the daily harvest of the best produce of any given moment. He even works to produce his own honey from on-site beehives that he maintains with beekeeper Rik Janssens to be used in place of refined sugars.
The 3 course tasting menu provides a limited selection for guests, but still feels like precisely the right amount without either overwhelming diners or leaving them feeling unsatisfied.
