Restaurant Find: Happy Ending NYC
A former dive bar, and former-former ”˜massage parlor’, cheekily-titled Happy Ending has been reimagined as an intimate downtown restaurant and nightspot. Psychedelic striped wallpaper and touches of Miami kitsch create a flirty Mad-Men-esque vibe, and the live jazz band in the evenings keep it decidedly loungey.
The dinner menu features French classics with a retro 50s twist ”“ try the deliciously-light steak tartare (served with waffle chips and a quail egg). The white table cloths and attentive service may tempt you to linger at the table, but it’s Happy Ending’s bar that really shines, with sublime cocktails and a quirky bar-food menu (the kitchen is open until 12am). The crisp, fresh Blue in Green (Gin, Lillet Rosé, Dry Curaçao & Lemon Juice) is a standout.
Throw in the bawdy basement club with it’s checkered dance floor and a disco ball, and it seems that maybe; in it’s latest iteration; Happy Ending has finally achieved its very own, er, happy ending.
