Restaurant Find: Merchants Tavern London
Located just off Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch, Merchants Tavern is housed in a Victorian warehouse and former apothecary, and comprises a large restaurant, buzzing bar and private dining room. Merchants Tavern serves a Modern European menu, directed by seasonality.
Upon arrival, I stood in the middle of the buzzing bar and drunk in the glorious interior. It’s Mad Men meets Victoriana, referencing the great design era of the fifties and sixties with the odd flash of neon lighting, a log fire and an awesome soundtrack.
Cocktails are classic with innovative riffs, staff are engaged and full of knowledgeable recommendations, and the atmosphere is buzzing.
My starter of quail featured a roasted breast, confit leg and pan fried foie gras, with hazelnut pesto and remoulade ”“ it’s a house dish, and rightly so. The plantation pork belly main was quite divine, with a hard-to-break layer of crackling topping the juicy meat below. Dessert was overshadowed by the warm lemon-scented Madeleines delivered fresh from the oven and were the perfect note to finish on.
