Restaurant Find: Oiji NYC

Some restaurants seem to just get it. They know exactly we’re looking for in a dining experience, and they give it to us every time. Oiji NYC, a self proclaimed “refined authentic Korean” restaurant in the East Village, is one of those restaurants.

It’s casual enough to pop in on a Monday after work, yet special enough for your anniversary dinner. It’s no surprise that we love the food (when have we ever said no to modern Asian cooking?), but the dishes here are truly unique. The beef tartare is almost too pretty to eat and the fried chicken is so good you may ask for a bucket to go. And don’t pass up the seafood broth filled with crispy rice (you may never eat non-crispy rice again) and an unexpected burst of truffle – reminding you what’s possible when Korean chefs train at classic, fine-dining restaurants and then open a restaurant fusing the two.

As far as ambiance, the important thing to know is that Oiji gets it right. Airy yet intimate, modern yet cozy, lively yet romantic. It’s suitable for any occasion and any taste buds, just know that the food is so captivating that you’ll find it’s all you’ll want to talk about.

She’s a street-food obsessed food and travel writer who spends her free time watching Anthony Bourdain reruns and exploring the nooks and crannies of her NYC neighborhood, Chinatown. Her heart is torn between Paris, the Greek Islands, Japan, and Penang, so her dream last supper would look something like a four course meal of sashimi, laksa, fresh grilled octopus, and a heaping plate of gooey French cheese.
