Sandwich Find: Harbs NYC
(November 9th 2015: Unfortunately, following a recent visit to Harbs NYC, Melting Butter no longer recommends this cafe due to a decreased standard in food quality)
With the arrival of Harbs NYC, an exact replica of Harbs in Japan, we’re beginning to think the Japanese can do no wrong.
The Chelsea outpost recently opened not only to the delight of homesick Japanese expats and Japanese ladies who lunch but also for New Yorkers looking for a sandwich that has been given the respect that few sandwiches ever receive.
Thick slices of pillowy, white shokupan ”“ a Japanese loaf inspired by (and improved on) since American Wonderbread ”“ act as a fluffy, cloud-like vessel for fresh fillings such as B.L.T, spinach, omelette and caprese. Harbs sandwiches consistently offer the perfect proportion of filling vs. bread with ingredients that have been selected and assembled with the same level of care and fuss that you’d expect in Japan.
While the creamy cakes, tea and coffee are the usual draw-card for a visit to Harbs, it’s our strong opinion that it’s the mouthwatering sandwiches that deserve the limelight at this French-cum-Japanese café.
