Shopping Find: Matter NYC
Walking into Matter’s sleek Soho space can feel like an elevating experience – the soaring, minimal space is filled with the sort of achingly beautiful pieces that make you fall in love with the world just a little bit more (or, at the very least, with the designers who created them).
Since opening in 2003, Matter’s founder Jamie Gray has been instrumental in discovering and showcasing some of the most innovative emerging furniture, homewares and lighting design talent. The pieces on display are treated with the reverence of an art collection, with regularly changing exhibits showcasing one or two particular designers’ work.
Currently on display are the hybrid-genre furniture creations from Belgian design duo Muller Van Severen – one standout here is the chair-chaise-floorlamp-in-one, a cheeky take on forward-looking minimalism and mid-century pragmatism. Also on show are the delicately crystalline light fittings by Brooklyn design-scene darling Bec Brittain, blending a smoky, vaguely art-deco glamor with a young and fresh playfulness; and, somehow; making it look easy (spoiler – it’s not easy). Matter’s own in-house furniture and lighting line, MatterMade, is also on offer with finely crafted modular storage systems and monumental signature pieces.
