SLY 5TH AVE’S ORCHESTRAL TRIBUTE TO DR DRE | FEBRUARY SPOTIFY PLAYLIST
Each month on Melting Butter, a new Spotify playlist gets published with a tightly edited selection of the best new and classic tracks geared towards listeners with a sophisticated ear.
In light of his recent release, “The Invisible Man: An Orchestral Tribute to Dr Dre” out on Tru Thoughts, we asked Sly 5th Ave to send over a playlist of tracks he’s inspired by right now. For those of you who aren’t familiar with his work, Sly 5th Ave is the moniker of Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II, the talented multi-instumentalist, arranger, composer and producer, who’s latest record, “The Invisible Man,” features orchestral arrangements for 23 of Dr. Dre’s iconic hop-hop tracks. With a deep understanding of soul and jazz, Sly’s selections take us through his new and old favorites in the jazz pallet – with a deep nod to his home state, Texas.
Sly lives, works and creates in Brooklyn, and is member of funk project Igbo, Ghost Note, Strawberry Jam and Quantic’s live band.
Some thoughts from Sly to get you in the mood for his rather personal playlist:
“The playlist represents songs that I’m really into at the moment. The inspiration behind it really was just trying to pick songs that make me feel good. I tried to stick with the jazz palette whether it be sampling or the song itself. Iʼve been digging back into some older records Iʼm less familiar with and they are quickly becoming some of my favorites. On the flip side, there’s a couple of tracks on here from the New Wave of Jazz Musicians who I find really inspiring. Of course, there is a nod to Dallas with Jon Bap & Erykah Badu””itʼs hard not to feel the presence of Texas, especially in all realms of music these days. And then it really just continues, weaving in and out of acoustic and electronic consciousness.”
Please enjoy, and happy February from Melting Butter Studios.
